When it comes to investing in a new kitchen, one factor trumps all others: a smooth build. Sure, we all want a functional, beautiful, shiny new space, but nobody wants the headache that often comes with it. Just thinking about renovations can send a chill down your spine. That’s why we’re big fans of local kitchen and bathroom designers John and Helle Olsen, owners of Collaroy Kitchen Centre.
They’ve got a secret weapon when it comes to kitchens: a builder’s license. It might not sound like a big deal, but trust us, it’s a total game-changer for project management, contracts, quality control, and efficiency. With this expertise, your kitchen will be installed and problems solved before you can even say, “hot dinner!” We sat down with John to learn more.
How does your Danish background influence the kitchens you create at Collaroy Kitchens?
I have grown up with beautiful and practical design, so of course it is important to me that a client’s new kitchen is practical and, of course, looks stunning. I like things to line up, doors to be equal size, and I can do that because our joinery is fully bespoke.
As a builder with a license, how does your experience and qualifications help streamline the contract and management processes for your clients?
When a project involves significant building work, it’s essential to have someone who understands the construction process to ensure a smooth flow of trades. If something unforeseen arises, such as asbestos, I have many contacts who can be onsite quickly to minimise delays. The client also benefits from dealing with just one person rather than coordinating multiple trades themselves. This aspect is often more important than it initially seems. Anyone who has renovated knows how stressful the process can be, but having a single point of contact eliminates that stress.
What steps do you take to ensure that every kitchen you create is of the highest quality, both in terms of materials and craftsmanship?
I work to very high standards, and our suppliers and contractors know and respect that. Over time, I’ve built strong relationships based on trust, reliability, and a shared commitment to quality. These connections make a real difference, ensuring that every project runs smoothly and meets the highest expectations.
How do you tailor each design to meet the individual needs of your clients?
I ask our clients about their cooking habits—how they cook, how many people they cook for, how often they entertain, and what they need storage for, whether it’s baking trays, spices, or other essentials. From there, I tailor the kitchen to suit the client's needs, striving to make it as close to perfect as possible for each individual client.
How do you balance aesthetic design and functionality in your kitchen projects?
I will first look at the functionality of what the client needs. Once I have all this covered, I will then design to suit the house’s other features. This is why every kitchen is different.
Describe your dream kitchen.
Our dream kitchen? As Benjamin Franklin said, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” A colour palette that feels warm and inviting, with plenty of texture and natural materials, like timber shelving, elegant stone splashbacks and benchtops, and cabinetry that complements the home’s style. Our motto here at CKC is always the Danish concept of hygge. It's creating a kitchen that’s not just practical but a warm, welcoming space where cooking, gathering, and everyday moments are a joy.
