With petrol prices continuing to bite, the NSW Liberals and Nationals have announced a Fuel Transparency Plan aimed at giving Northern Beaches motorists real certainty at the bowser.
Member for Manly James Griffin MP says the plan addresses something families and businesses here are already feeling. "Families and businesses across the Northern Beaches are already dealing with rising costs, and sudden fuel price spikes only make things harder," Mr Griffin said. "This plan is about giving motorists transparency and certainty so they can see the price ahead of time and know it won't suddenly jump at the bowser."
The first phase of the plan would introduce legislation requiring service stations to publicly report and lock in their daily fuel price for 24 hours, so drivers can check the price before they leave home. Strong penalties would apply to operators who attempt to mislead consumers or manipulate prices.
A second phase, to be implemented if the Coalition wins government in 2027, would focus on longer-term fuel security, including expanding storage capacity, exploring domestic fuel production options and mapping the relationship between electricity, gas and liquid fuels.
The plan builds on Fuel Check, the state's existing price reporting system introduced by the Coalition in 2016, while adding stronger consumer protections and daily price certainty for drivers across the region.
KEY ELEMENTS / NSW Fuel Transparency Plan
- Daily price lock-in — retailers required to publicly report and hold their maximum fuel price for 24 hours
- Advance price notification — see the next day's price before you leave home
- Strong penalties for non-compliance — targeting operators who mislead consumers or manipulate prices
- Greater competition and transparency — helping drivers compare and find the best price
- Regional fuel supply review — examining resilience across supply chains
