Manly Library goes 24/7

Manly Library has officially opened its doors around the clock, with Northern Beaches Council launching 24/7 access for eligible members. It is the second library on The Beaches to offer unstaffed, anytime entry, giving locals more freedom to read, study and use the space on their own schedule.

The move follows a highly successful community trial held from June to November 2025. More than 1,300 residents took part, recording over 20,000 visits in just 24 weeks. The service proved especially popular during the HSC study period, with strong feedback from students and community members who welcomed access outside standard opening hours.

Mayor Sue Heins said the response clearly showed how important flexible community spaces have become.

“The response from our community has been fantastic. Flexible access to our libraries is clearly something people truly value,” Mayor Heins said.

“Manly Library 24/7 is about recognising the changing rhythms of life on The Beaches, whether it’s students studying late, parents collecting resources after hours, or anyone seeking a quiet place at any time of day or night.”

The trial also highlighted strong community respect for the space, with no incidents of vandalism and only minor breaches of conditions recorded.

Access during unstaffed hours is available to Northern Beaches Library members aged 16 and over, following completion of an on-site induction at Manly Library.

The Manly 24/7 project has been funded through State Library NSW public library funding.
